A forest has been planted in Norway to supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in a century’s time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the manuscripts held in trust, unread and unpublished, until the year 2114. These writings are being stored in a specially designed room within the new public library in Oslo.
"Future Library" is a living, evolving project that spans generations, connecting writers and readers across time while highlighting humanity's ongoing relationship with nature, memory, and creativity. It is a long-term artistic endeavor that bridges the present with the future, creating a literary legacy that will be revealed in the 22nd century.
Contributing authors to date include Margaret Atwood (2014), David Mitchell (2015), Sjón (2016), Elif Shafak (2017), Han Kang (2018), Karl Ove Knausgård (2019), Ocean Vuong (2020), Tsitsi Dangarembga (2021), Judith Schalansky (2022), Valeria Luiselli (2023), and Tommy Orange (2024). This certificate grants the holder a full set of the anthologies, which will be delivered in 2114, offering a unique glimpse into the literary legacy of a century past.
"Future Library" is a profound symbol of intergenerational connection—a bridge between past, present, and future, where the words of today will speak to future generations, while the growing forest ensures a lasting bond between the written word and the natural world.
