Limbo depicts one male and one female character walking briskly in lockstep. The pair’s bendy limbs intertwine within a compressed space of activity that unfolds on a mustard-yellow horizon line splicing diagonally, perhaps threateningly, upward. Caught in an act of either fleeing or performing self-improvement, for these subjects, the robust dimensionality of Weaver’s lines gives way to assured postures that convey fearful escape or threatening encroachment on the one hand; and intimacy on the other. The male subject peers backwards toward his counterpart, an abstracted newspaper firmly in his grasp. As in several other paintings, Weaver obscures the faces of these two figures, allowing their individual moods and relationship to one another to remain in ambiguity.
