Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian is best known for her mirror-works, in which cut polygonal fragments of reverse-painted, reflective glass are arranged into kaleidoscopic compositions grounded on principles of Islamic geometry. Dissecting and reassembling the traditional surface construction of the mirror-mosaic, each of her works is anchored by central polygons, whose numeric properties have symbolic meanings in Islamic design. According to a reference text often used by Monir, the ten-sided decagon, for example, is a "perfect number" and reflects the balanced disposition of the body: "head, neck, chest, belly, abdomen, thoratic cavity, pelvic girlde, two thighs, two legs, two feet."
