Yun-Fei Ji’s latest body of work expresses the anxieties and uncertainties of the current political and social climate. He captures the chaos and tension of existing in a global moment in which protestors in the United States and Hong Kong were met with authoritarian police response, and government-endorsed xenophobia lead to racist attacks against Asians becoming epidemic in cities like New York and San Fransisco. In several of these works, what at first glance appears to be a fantastical meeting of man and beast is also a statement on present American sociopolitical conditions. The pointed hoods that proliferate throughout these paintings suggest the white hoods and robes of the Klu Klux Klan, a reflection of the strains of racism, nativism, and nationalism that were given a new central platform by the last American President.
