In "The protesters," 2021, Yun-Fei Ji paints his figures wearing the gas masks that Hong Kong protestors used to shield themselves against a Chinese paramilitary response. The pointed hoods that proliferate throughout these latest works suggest the white hoods and robes of the Klu Klux Klan, a reflection of the strains of racism, nativism, and nationalism that were given a new central platform by the last American President.
