In "Bad Grapes (Desert Island)" from her "Bad Fruit" series, Kathleen reimagines a decaying grape bunch with unexpected materials – such as a cooper pipes and turquoise – at an imposing scale. Mining the American craft tradition of pushpin-beaded fruit, Ryan encrusts the carved form’s surface with glass and acrylic beads to delineate “fresh” parts and semiprecious stone beads for “rotten” areas, a conceptual and material subversion through which she explores ideas of value, desire and overconsumption.
