Since the early 1990’s, Fred Tomaselli has created multimedia paintings which explode in mesmerizing and hallucinatory compositions. Drawing upon art historical sources and Eastern and Western decorative traditions, After March 21, 2020, Butterfly Population Declines (2022), sees organic matter, collaged elements, and hand-painted fauna suspended in layers of clear, polished resin. There is always a suggestion of transformation in the materials encapsulated in resin, creating a tension between the dynamism of the image and the stasis of its medium – a tension echoed in the subject matter, which smashes together the wondrousness of nature with the reality of human existence.
